Lela Mae Freienmuth

Services for Lela Mae Freienmuth, 97, Lawrence, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Freienmuth died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 5, 1901, near Baker, the daughter of Nelson G. and Anna F. Walters. She graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1918.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church and a life member of the Order of The Eastern Star, past matron and secretary of Rinda Chapter, No. 82, Tonganoxie. She was a charter member and past president of the Parental Study Club, a member of the Tonganoxie Library Assn., Civic Reading Club and Kansas Grange. She served on the board of Friendship Valley School, was a representative to the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs and a Red Cross nurses' aide during World War II. She was an organizer of the Tonganoxie Garden Club and a two term president of the Leavenworth County Home Economics Advisory Board, and a member of the Kansas, Leavenworth County and Tonganoxie historical societies.

She married W. Hans Freienmuth on April 5, 1919, in Tonganoxie. He died in 1982.

Survivors include a son, William L. Freienmuth, Quincy, Pa.; a daughter, Shirley Ann Kasper, Tonganoxie; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
