Grendel E. McKimpson was born on February 14, 1917 at Newton, Iowa, the son of Erden LeRoy and Stella M. (Hampton) McKimpson. He grew up in southern Iowa (Union County). He graduated from Thayer High School at Thayer, Iowa, in 1934 and attended Osceola Junior College. Subsequent schooling resulted in a B.A. degree from the University of Iowa, and B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University in 1954. His major specialty was animal nutrition. Doc served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged as a Captain in 1946.

On July 23, 1943, Doc married Phyllis M. Lang at Leesville, Louisiana. He and Phyllis celebrated 62 plus years together until Phyllis's death on January 6, 2006.

Doc taught at a rural school in Union County, Iowa, and taught high school vocational agriculture in northwest Iowa. He served as technical representative of the Borden Company, and later served as director of animal nutrition and technical director of the feed division of the company. His work took him to Canada, South America, and Mexico. He and his family resided in both Canada and Venezuela and he also had technical responsibilities in Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia. Doc was employed by Oelwein Chemical Company from 1968 until his retirement in 1982.

He spent his remaining years as a resident of Oelwein, remaining active in Masonic and Legion activities, as well as community and craft activities. Doc was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, a member of Ross Reid American Legion Post # 9, a member and past Worshipful Master in 1993 of Hebron Masonic Lodge # 374 A.F & A.M., a member of York Rite, El Kahir Shrine, and the # 374 Masonic Luncheon Club. He also served on the American Feed Manufacturers Association Nutrition Council for ten years. In 1987 he spent a month in China as a representative of the Eisenhower People to People Program. Around town he was known as Doc or G.E.—few knew his given name. Doc enjoyed working with horses, gardening, and woodworking.

Doc is survived by his Daughter: Jeanne McKimpson of Rochester, Minnesota; Son: Marvin (Rhonda) McKimpson of Germantown Hills, Illinois; 4 Grandchildren: Nathan (JoAnn) McKimpson, Karl McKimpson, Wendy McKimpson, and Neal McKimpson; 3 Nieces, 2 Nephews, and a Sister-in-law: Darlene McKimpson of Woodburn, Iowa.
