Mabel Marie McFall Tanking

Mabel Marie Tanking, 94, Sabetha, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at a Sabetha care center.

She was born April 28, 1907, in the Maple Ridge community north of Woodlawn in Nemaha County, to John and Jane McCoy McFall. She attended Maple Ridge School and graduated from Sabetha High School in 1925. She was a teacher for 46 years in Nemaha County.

She taught at Maple Ridge School for 10 years, at Capioma School a year and at Oneida Elementary School for five years. She taught for seven years at Morning Star Rural School and 23 years at Sabetha Elementary School.

She spent many summers attending classes at colleges including Pittsburg State, Emporia State and Peru State in Peru, Neb. She received a B.S. degree in elementary education from Peru State.

She was a member of the former Maple Ridge United Methodist Church south of Sabetha. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers' sorority, the Sabetha Garden Club and Nemaha County Retired Teachers. She was a former member of Sabetha Business and Professional Women and an honorary member of the National Education Association.

She married Paul J. Tanking on June 29, 1954. He died Aug. 12, 1989.

Survivors include stepsons, Martin Tanking, Sabetha, Sylvester C. "Bud" Tanking, Salina, and Robert L. Tanking, Belleville, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Celene Henry, Sun City, Calif.; nine stepgrandchildren; and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. Burial will be in Sabetha Cemetery.
