James Oliver McCoy

SABETHA, Kansas -- James Oliver McCoy, 89, Sabetha, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the Sabetha hospital.

Mr. McCoy had worked as a journeyman carpenter and later as a custodian for the Highland Park High School in the 501 School District in Topeka, Kansas from 1960 to 1976. He was a farmer and stockman most of his life. He also had worked as a custodian at the Medical Arts Building in Seneca, Kansas, for about five years.

Born on the family farm near Woodlawn, Kansas, on Aug. 9, 1911, he was raised there. He attended the Maple Ridge Rural School.

Mr. McCoy was a member of the Oneida, Kansas, United Methodist Church and Oneida Masonic Lodge No. 323, A.F. & A.M.

On June 21, 1950, he married Mary F. Leslie in Topeka. She survives of the home.

Mr. McCoy was preceded in death by his parents, Archibald G. and Nina; three sisters, Vera Niccum, Ruth Alley and Myrtle Deaver; and a brother, Charles.

Additional survivors: two sons, David L. and Daniel J., both of Sabetha; and a daughter, Mary Jane Schmelzle, Seneca.

Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Woodlawn Baptist Church, with Masonic rites to follow. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: after noon today, at the Popkess Mortuary, Sabetha. Memorials may be made to the Oneida United Methodist Church or Woodlawn Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.

James McCoy

James Oliver McCoy was born August 9, 1922 (should be 1911), the son of Archibald Glass and Nina Shortridge McCoy, on the family farm near Woodlawn. He grew up in the Woodlawn area and attended Maple Ridge Rural School. He was united in marriage to Mary Frances Leslie on June 21, 1950, at Topeka. Three children were born.

He worked as a journeyman carpenter and later as a custodian for the 501 School District in Topeka at the Highland Park High School from 1960 to 1976. He was a farmer and stockman and raised cattle on the McCoy farm most of his life. He also worked in the Medical Arts Building in Seneca for four or five years as a custodian.

Oliver was a member of the Oneida United Methodist Church and the Oneida Masonic Lodge #323 AF&AM.

Oliver died November 26, 2000, at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 89.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vera Niccum, Ruth Alley and Myrtle Deaver; and one brother, Charles McCoy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary McCoy of Sabetha; two sons, David L. McCoy and Daniel J. McCoy, both of Sabetha; and one daughter, Mary Jane Schmelzle of Seneca.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 30, 10:30 a.m., at the Woodlawn Baptist Church with Masonic services to follow. Friends may call any time after 12:00 Tuesday. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneida United Methodist Church and the Woodlawn Baptist Church and sent in care of the funeral home.
