Mary F. McCoy

WOODLAWN --- Mary F. McCoy, 92, Woodlawn, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Sabetha Community Hospital.

Mrs. McCoy worked and taught at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka from 1959 until retiring in 1975. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Baptist Church, southwest of Sabetha.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

A family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary F. McCoy Nursing Scholarship Fund, the Oneida United Methodist Church or the Woodlawn Baptist Church and sent in care of the funeral home.

Mary McCoy

Mary Frances McCoy was born October 13, 1911, on the family farm near Salem, NE, the daughter of Nathan Leslie and Elsie Schletzbaum Leslie, the oldest of eight children born to this union. She attended schools at Woodlawn southwest of Sabetha and then attended Willow Glen Schools southwest of Goff, and graduated from Bancroft Rural High School in 1936.

Following graduation, she briefly attended Kansas University, where she received training for music and then taught music and piano. Later she cared for her ill father until his death.

She then worked as an aide at the tuberculosis sanitarium in Norton. Later she attended Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka as a member of the Army Nurse Cadet Corps, and completed her training in February 1945. On March 12, 1945, she was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps. She served in Germany during World War II and was discharged in late 1946.

On June 21, 1950, she was united in marriage to James Oliver McCoy at Topeka. She went into private duty nursing and in 1953 was night supervisor at Hiawatha Community Hospital and later relocated to Topeka, where she worked and taught from 1959 until her retirement in 1975 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. She then returned to the Woodlawn community.

She was a member of the Oneida United Methodist Church and also attended the Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was also a member of American Legion Post #126 in Sabetha and a former member of the Woodlawn Baptist Missionary Group and also a former member of the Woodlawn Extension Unit.

Mary died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 26, 2000; two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her sons, David and Daniel McCoy; and her daughter, Mary Jane Schmelzle of Seneca; seven grandchildren; one brother, Frank Leslie of Lawrence; two sisters, Edna Wessel of Burlingame and Lucy Ward of Pratt.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 29, at the Woodlawn Baptist Church southwest of Sabetha. A family visitation was held Friday evening at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
