Mary L. Brierley

We are again called upon to record the passing of another from the rapidly thinning ranks of our pioneer women, Mrs. Mary L. Brierley, who died Friday, November 19 at Portland, Oregon. Obsequies were held Saturday, cremation following, according to her last wishes. The ashes will remain at the Portland crematorium.

Mrs. Mary L. Brierley - nee Bennett - had been a continuous resident of Glasco for fifty years, and was widely known, especially among the older residents, and by her unvarying gentility, poise and dignity held the respect and admiration of all who came in contact with her, and the love of all who were privileged to know her intimately.

In her younger days, she was the interest worker in educational lines, teaching in Clyde, Concordia and Glasco, serving as County Superintendent of Public Instruction for four years, and afterwards serving a number of years on the fifth district school board. She was also very much interested in the Glasco cemetery and was a member of the cemetery board at the time of her death.

Her later years were spent quietly with her books, and with a group of congenial friends in the study of the best in literature. She conducted the Shakespeare Club for a period of twenty-eight years, during which time some eighty women were given the benefit of her years of study and understanding of this master writer. She also gave of her time and of her knowledge of the Masters of Literature to the other clubs of town, a service that was greatly appreciated.

Her death was not unexpected, as she had been seriously ill for months and had gone to Portland for Medical aid. Her husband, Dr. J.H. Brierley, well known physician of Glasco, preceded her in death twenty-one years.
